Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) during an interview with “RadiogacetaRNE” announced that the 2022 season will be the last of his career. The 41-year-old still impresses with his form despite the passage of time.
The 2018 world champion, famous for his great versatility, recently felt the breath of his much younger colleagues on his back. He has been overshadowed by stars like Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) and Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck – Quick Step), but he still knows how to win.
He proved it during the 2021 season, by scoring three victories (including at the Critérium du Dauphiné stage) and by rubbing his scalp during the Tour de France (he was second in the 15th stage). Even though he will be 42 in April, he has decided to stay in the peloton for another year. This time, however, it will definitely be his last season.
For Eusebio Unzue and all of Movistar, this is certainly very good news. The group haven’t had a very successful season behind them, and before 2022, transfer moves aren’t very optimistic either. It seems that despite the old age of many, “El Bal” will remain the biggest star on the team.
