Ondra qualified for the eight-man final from sixth place, so he started third. He struggled mightily on the first block until he reached the top zone on fifth down in the final minute. Then he advanced further and reached the final one-handed hold, but fell and did not register the top. Instead of less than 25 points, he only had 9.6.
But he managed the other three rocks. He was particularly happy after the triple success. After taking attempts into account, he has 84.1 points at mid-final, while third Japanese Sorato Anraku has nine tenths of a point more. Just ahead of Ondra is the American Colin Duffy. Briton Toby Roberts won all three peaks as a climber from third to fifth place, but he only managed the first zone on the opening boulder and has 79.3 points.
An additional 100 points are available for each struggling climber. Four points are deducted for each capture just below the top, gradually the point value of the captures decreases.
