Doubts over new Ferrari engine, debut postponed: not ready yet

The introduction of the new powertrain has been postponed to the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz in preparation for the final of the Formula 1 World Championship 2021. its introduction also threatened for the next Turkish GP.

The Ferrari hasn’t won a Formula 1 race for two years (Cavallino’s last success came in Singapore with Sebastian Vettel on September 22, 2019). In the first part of this Global 2021 La Rossa has sometimes come close to returning to the top step of the podium in F1, but Leclerc and Sainz have not yet managed to end the long fast.

The reason why Maranello’s team haven’t come back to win a race yet, in addition to a few small unfortunate episodes (see Leclerc’s non-departure from the pole to Monte-Carlo), it is no mystery: the SF21, although clearly superior to the disastrous SF1000 of 2020, still has a speed deviation compared to Mercedes and Red Bull (and often also compared to McLaren and Alpha Tauri).

We are missing 20 horses“admitted team principal Mattia Binotto at the end of the Italian GP at Monza, in the ‘Temple of Speed’, where it was precisely the speed that kept Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz from overtaking the fourth and sixth places. here at the end of the season, however, the Maranello team are hoping to make a a step forward in terms of performance by introducing a new power unit which, in addition to serving as a test for 2022, should immediately guarantee a power increase (between 10 and 15 hp more) and therefore speed.

New engine for Hamilton in Istanbul: heavy penalty on the starting grid for Mercedes

However, it seems that I initial plans of the Cavallino, who announced the introduction of the new engine immediately after the Monza race, will not be respected because the new engine that will be mounted on the SF21s of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz would not be finished yet:

We are working very hard to prepare it as soon as possible. It’s a change of technology in the hybrid part. In order to introduce the improvement, we must first transport the materials and, since they are dangerous, formal approvals and certificates are required because of this – Mattia Binotto spoke about it at the crash.net portal –.

So it’s not just a matter of developing the hybrid system and testing its reliability in one way or another, but there are also a lot of aspects that we need to tackle before we have it available on the track – added the director of the Ferrari team –. At the time we have not decided on any competition to introduce it. It will be as soon as possible because we believe that the sooner we do things this season the better for next year. So i hope – finally concluded the number one of the Maranello racing team –, to be able to make improvements in the next races“.

It therefore appears certain that the introduction of the new powertrain for the single-seaters of the Cavallino he won’t make it to the next Russian GP, scheduled for next weekend in Sochi. But Carlos Sainz also questioned whether that would happen at the upcoming Turkish Grand Prix, raising doubts about the actual state of work on the new Ferrari powertrain: “I’m not sure the engine will arrive in Turkey. You will have news in the coming weeks, we will communicate it to you in due course“In fact, the Spaniard commented on the matter.

In light of these revelations, it therefore appears that at best, new powertrain will not be fitted to Leclerc and Sainz SF21s before US GP (in Austin from October 22 to 24) and will be used to the maximum for the last 5-6 races of the 2021 World Championship.
