Portugal and Romania rushed in and sent Sweden to the ladder game in an EC half. Hungary and Denmark are the other national teams with a chance of a medal when the tournament continues on Friday.
Portugal lost the opener to Germany but clapped twice a few days later when promoted and the defeat disappeared from the calculations. Once in the main round, one of the upstarts went on with two more wins and over 20 goals in total. Portugal are playing for a medal for the first time in the history of the EC U19, which does not apply to the others in the top four.
The trio of Denmark, Hungary and Romania have won eight of the previous 13 championships together.
Hungary are the only undefeated team remaining in the medal hunt and 41-23 over Denmark in the last impressed effort.
Now hosts Romania await, while Portugal and Denmark face off in the other semi-final. Sweden finish the EC U19 with two classification matches for places five to eight, the first against Montenegro at noon (12:00) on Friday.
