Jiří Lehečka went to the 2nd round of the Belgrade clay court tournament after winning 6:2, 7:5 over Swiss Henri Laaksonen, whom he beat again after ten days. On the other hand, Tereza Martincová lost in the 1st round of the Istanbul clay court tournament 4: 6, 5: 7 with Hungarian Anna Bondárová. Markéta Vondroušová again finished in the 1st round in Stuttgart.
The 20-year-old Czech tennis player’s next opponent will be second seed Andrej Rubljov from Russia, who had time off in the first round.
Lehečka and Laaksonen repeated the winning match of the qualification for the Masters tournament in Monte Carlo, where he then lost in the 1st round. Currently, the 93rd player in the world ranking was supposed to qualify in Belgrade and, as the highest bidder, did so without losing the set. In the match against the ranking neighbor Laaksonen (92nd), he used all three breakballs and, on the contrary, avoided the two threats of losing his own serve.
In the main competition of the ATP Tour, Lehečka scored his first victory since February’s tournament in Rotterdam, where he went from qualifying to the semi-finals in a sensational way.
Former Austrian third player Dominic Thiem has made an unsuccessful return to the courts after a nearly year-long hiatus with a wrist injury in Belgrade. Last year’s US Open winner in the first round lost 3:6, 6:3, 4:6 to Australian John Millman.
Tereza Martincová’s defeat in Istanbul was not enough for Hungary’s Bondárová and she registered her fourth consecutive defeat. In the second set, the Czech eighth seed didn’t use the 4:1 lead and lost the match in 102 minutes.
Martincova, 27, has been waiting to win for more than a month since winning the first round of the tournament in Indian Wells. On Friday, in this year’s clay debut in the Prague Billie Jean King Cup qualifier against Great Britain, she lost to all twelve Emma Raducanuová.
Marie Bouzková and WTA Tour debutant Nikola Bartůňková will perform singles today in Istanbul. The first match on the elite circuit since January, when she lost her Australian visa due to lack of coronavirus vaccination and had to leave the country before the Australian Open, is completed by debutant Renata Voráčová. His partner in the tournament is Bondárová.
Vondroušová lost seventh deployed Ons Jabúrová from Tunisia 6:4, 2:6 and 3:6 in Stuttgart. She entered the match with the top ten and won the first set in 37 minutes. Jabur then refined the game and from 2 to 2 in the second set, won seven games in a row.
In the deciding set, she took a 3-0 lead and 22-year-old Vondroušová couldn’t erase the loss. Although she managed to avoid the first sword strike, Jabur’s matches ended.
Former tournament winners Karolína Plíšková and Petra Kvitová will also perform in Stuttgart. The Czech stars will face off in the first round on Wednesday, after which the winner will face Lyudmila Samsonova of Russia.
