It is set between the films “Paradise is Burning”, “The Opponent” and “Together 99”.
It will soon be time to select Sweden’s nominee for the 2024 Oscars. Today, the Swedish Film Institute presents its shortlist of three titles that passed the first round.
paradise is burning (Mika Gustavson)
“Heaven is on Fire” revolves around three sisters united in a messy but loving everyday life, without parents. But when social services sense trouble, Laura is forced to seek help outside of the safety of the herd. Mika Gustafson’s youth drama is invited to the Venice Film Festival and will have its world premiere next Thursday. Then there will be a Swedish cinema premiere on October 27.
The adversary (Milad Alami)
In “The Adversary”, we meet wrestler Iman, forced to leave Iran with his family when a devastating rumor spreads about him. He is forced to give up everything and start from scratch in Sweden, with his family. The film is directed by Milad Alami, who also wrote the screenplay, and in the main role we find Payman Maadi, known among others for the films of Asghar Farhadi. “The Adversary” was released in theaters in March.
Set 99 (Lukas Moodyson)
In 1975, the Together collective was a big family. 24 years later, in 1999, it became the smallest in the world. Lukas Moodysson has reunited the great cast of “Together” after 23 years. The film is invited to the Toronto Film Festival and will have its world premiere there on Sunday, September 10. Swedish cinema premiere October 13.
At least half of the dialogue must be in a language other than English – but it does not have to be in Swedish. In recent years, “Boy From Heaven” in Arabic by Tarik Saleh and “And Then We Danced” in Georgian by Levan Akin have been sent as contributions from Sweden.
On September 29 at 10 a.m., the winning candidate will be presented at a press conference. We will be able to follow the 96th Academy Awards on television on March 10, 2024.
