Ski Flying World Championships: the German eagle beaten by Karl Geiger | Winter sports news

Defending champion Karl Geiger has no realistic chance of winning another medal after day one of the World Ski Flying Championships in Vikersund, Norway.

The 29-year-old from Oberstdorf climbed 209.0 and 199.0m (389.9 points) in the first two of four runs on the biggest hill in the world in very difficult wind conditions, making him the best German with 389.9 points only in 13th place.

At halftime, the Norwegian Olympic champion Marius Lindvik (457.5), who jumped 232.5 and 226.5 m, is ahead of the Austrian Stefan Kraft (451.0) and the Slovenian Domen Prevc (437.6 ).

The other Germans also have no chance of getting on the podium. German record holder Markus Eisenbichler (Siegsdorf) flew 185.0m and 204.5m, so third place in the 2020 World Cup is 22nd (361.9).

The experienced Severin Freund (Rastbüchl), 2014 world champion in Harrachov in the Czech Republic, ranked 14th with 206.5 and 209.0 m (385.3 points). The young Constantin Schmid (Oberaudorf) jumped 206 0.0m twice and finished 15th (384.1), Andreas Wellinger (Ruhpolding/216.5+187.5m) in 16th place.

Rounds three and four will take place on Saturday from 4:30 p.m. On Sunday there will be another team flight event.
