Slovak superstar Vlhová’s icy confession: he hurt me, he could have destroyed my body

Either I burn, it destroys my body, or I disgust skiing. This is how ski star Petra Vlhová talks about the last phase of cooperation with famous trainer Livio Magoni. Today’s most popular Slovak athlete has revealed her feelings in a biography called Petra, which will be published in mid-November.

Parts of the forthcoming book have been published by the Slovak portal sme.sk. And sometimes that’s a very cold read. Especially when the 2019 world champion talks about working with the Italian coach who was at the origin of her rise and success and with whom she broke up this spring.

“The first three years with Livio Magoni were amazing. He showed me a new world. He showed me how the best work. Gradually, however, it started to go wrong and last season was a massacre, “Vlhová said.

At the same time, last year the 26-year-old star achieved the greatest success of his career – he topped the overall World Cup standings. However, that didn’t stop her from ending her cooperation with Magoni after the triumph.

“If I continued with him, I would last a maximum of two more years and I would stop. Either I burn, my body is destroyed, or I don’t like skiing,” said the native of Liptovský Mikuláš who does not take napkins.

Especially mentally, Vlhová was no longer able to withstand the demands of an Italian expert. “Livio took me like a machine. Not like a woman who also has feelings, who has her days and who sometimes fails. He was never satisfied”, explains the winner of twenty World Cup races in the delivered. “He hurt me and the people on the team. It was sick,” he added.

When she tried to talk to Magoni, everything only got worse. “When I confided in him, it came back to me like a boomerang,” Vlhová admits. “I’ve never had a closer relationship with him. He refused. I’ve never been good enough for Livia,” she complained.

The last straw for Vlhová was an interview Magoni gave to an Italian newspaper. “I had a press conference at Bratislava Castle, after which I slept with a friend in Trenčín. In the morning I read the news on my cell phone and suddenly I saw the headline: Petra will not get better, she is not going to have it in her DNA “, remembers Vlhová with a nasty surprise.

“I clicked on the article. At first I didn’t understand what it meant. I opened it in the original. It was in Italian. Interview with Livio Magoni for Corriere della Sera. ‘had it translated and read everything. I collapsed mentally, “revealed a Slovak skier, world champion in giant slalom from 2019.” I screamed for about three hours, I didn’t was able to stop it, ”she admitted.

At that time, she knew that after five years another common path was not possible. “I called my brother to tell him I was finishing Livia. I was swearing on the phone. At that point I hated him, he ruined all the joy of a big globe,” Vlhová added.

Her new coach is the Swiss Mauro Pini, with whom she has agreed for a year so far and their goal will be success at the Beijing Olympics in 2022. The 55-year-old expert has already prepared several ski aces .

He has collaborated with Swiss skier Lara Gutová-Behrami, with whom Vlhová fought last year for overall triumph, the former World Championships winner and Olympic downhill and giant slalom champion Tina Mazeová from Slovenia. Previously he was also the head coach of successful Swiss skiers Didier Cuche et al. then the representation of women.

However, Magoni, who will help the female representation of Slovenian skiers in the new season, has not been out of work for long.
