Five scouts before the match

The League of Nations begins
The last edition of the Nations League played Sweden in the A division. After difficult matches against France, Portugal and Croatia, Sweden finished in fourth place and therefore were relegated to the B division. Sweden was drawn in Group 4 with today’s opponents Slovenia as well as Norway and Serbia. The winner of the group goes to division A while the jumbo of the group is relegated to division C.

The first competitive game against Slovenia for men
Sweden and Slovenia have only met twice on the men’s side. Both times, it was a question of training internationals. In 2008, it was a 1-0 win at Gothenburg while the 2016 Malmö international match ended in a draw. Today, the countries face off in a competitive international match for the first time ever on the men’s side.

Newcomers from Slovenia in Nations League Division B
While Sweden were relegated to Division B before this edition of the Nations League, Slovenia were relegated to Division C as they did in the previous two editions. This will be the first season in Division B for Slovenia.

New names in the team
In the June collection squad, there are three players who received their first ever national A team call-ups. Hjalmar Ekdal, Gabriel Gudmundsson and Edvin Kurtulus are all completely fresh in the national A team context and have the opportunity to make their senior debut in blue and yellow. Joel Andersson is also called by Janne Andersson for the first time since fall 2020.

Troop changes in Sweden
A blue and yellow trio miss tonight’s game against Slovenia. Kerim Mrabti received a blow at a training ground earlier in the week and left the team. Jesper Karlsson feels injured and Anthony Elanga is ill, both players are staying at the players’ hotel in Sweden. Federation captain Janne Andersson therefore opted to bring in Branimir Hrgota from Germany’s Greuther Fürth.

The coaching quote

– We are doing something a bit new and with new players. A little more than I initially thought maybe, but it opens up opportunities. My experience as a coach is that players who get the chance usually take it. I think it’s exciting, it’ll be fun and interesting to see who comes forward. If we can develop as a team in these four matches and some players advance, I’m very happy,” said Sweden national team captain Janne Andersson.
