“I know you looked at me tonight and you’re proud of me. Rest in peace dad,” Carmona wrote on social media after Sunday’s game against England. She accompanied the emotional message with a picture of herself kissing the gold medal.
“Without realizing it, I already had my star before kick-off. I know you gave me the strength to do something truly unique,” she added. She was referring to the gold star that is pinned on the winning team’s shirt after winning the football championship.

The 23-year-old’s father died on Friday after a long battle with illness, Reuters reported.
According to the Spanish server Relief her family and friends decided to tell her the sad news after Sunday’s final so she could focus on the deciding match. Her mother and brother arrived in Australia on Saturday to support her.
In the final of the football championship, the Spaniards finally beat England 1-0 precisely thanks to the shot of captain Carmona, who fell in the 29th minute of the match. They thus became world champions for the first time in history.
Carmona held up his jersey to celebrate the goal that ultimately won the game. After the game, she explained that she did it in honor of her best friend’s recently deceased mother.
