The United Nations Model is an event popular around the world, where young people play the role of delegates of the UN member states and participate in the simulation of the meeting of this organization by discussing issues of importance to the international community.

In Poland, the events were organized for the fifteenth time by students from the Secondary School of General Stefan Batory in Warsaw. More than 200 delegates from many Polish cities, as well as countries such as Switzerland, Slovenia, Italy and the United States came to the Warsaw Model United Nations 2021 (WawMUN 2021), which started Friday and lasts until Monday.

Multipolar world

The theme of this year’s edition is “United Nations in a Multipolar World”. Young people divided into committees such as WHO, UN Women or UNICEF will include topics related to UN peacekeeping missions, the mental health of people in developing countries, the situation of the Uyghurs in China or the economic means to stabilize Central America. Young people participating in the event must demonstrate not only knowledge of the problems of the countries they will represent as delegates, but also knowledge of how the deliberations of the UN General Assembly or discussions about the UN agencies are going. The event will be held entirely in English, which is an opportunity for young people to use their language skills.

– This great enterprise that brings together young people and teachers from different Polish cities, as well as guests from abroad, was prepared on the initiative of young people and organized by them – emphasized Barbara Kardas, director of Secondary School No. 2 im. Stefan Bator. – This energy of young people, as well as the interest in various problems facing the modern world, prove that the youth of Batory High School, a school with such a long and rich tradition, is ready to combine history with the most current challenges of the modern age.

During the few days of the conference, the participants will not only take on the role of delegates from the UN member states, but also get to know the capital of Poland, exchange experiences and make friends.
