Ljubomir Vranjes takes over the role of sporting director at Flensburg-Handewitt and another club legend, Lars Christiansen, does not get a contract renewal. Then the Dane criticizes his club and believes they are saying one thing and doing another.

Lars Christiansen celebrated great triumphs on the pitch with SG Flensburg-Handewitt and since 2019 he has had a responsible role in the sporting management of the club. But when the contract expired, the club opted not to extend it. Instead, they bring in Ljubomir Vranjes – who has held several different roles at the club over the years – as sporting director.

In an interview with Danish TV 2 Sport Lars Christiansen harshly criticizes his club.

– I no longer recognize the club and their way of acting. And I can’t explain some of the things that have happened over the last few months; that they say one thing but do something else, he told the Danish television channel.

“The council gets involved”

Among other things, it sheds light on the communication related to the dismissal of former head coach Maik Machulla. Assistant coach Mark Bult was then promised to have the rest of the season to prove he was the right person for the job, but soon after the club hired GOG coach Nicolej Krickau. Christiansen doesn’t think it went well.

– I can’t be part of a place where you are not honest with people, says Christiansen and also thinks that the board is trying hard in sports decisions.

In Flensburg-Handewitt’s press release in conjunction with Vranje’s presentation, the club indicated they wanted to reinvigorate the position.

– We have decided on a reorientation and new impulses in the field of sport. We at SG Flensburg-Handewitt are extremely grateful to Lars Christiansen for his work and he will always have his place in the history of the club. We wish him the best for the future and hope he continues to visit us as an SG legend, said club CEO Holger Glandorf.

Lars Christiansen played at Flensburg-Handewitt 1996–2010. He brought his name to the club’s arena: Lars Christiansen Platz. He won two gold medals at the European Championships with Denmark.
