2022 World Championships in Athletics: results of Czech athletes

Javelin thrower Jakub Vadlejch was the only one from the Czech team, which eventually had 24 athletes, to win a medal. He was only 4 centimeters away from the silver medal won by Indian competitor Níranž Čopra. He then lost over 2 meters to winner Anderson Peters.

The progression of the 4×400 m relay, the 8th consecutive place in the final race and the time of 3:01.63 s, with which the quartet Matěj Krsek, Pavel Maslák, Michal Desenský and Patrik Šorm set a new national record, can certainly be ranked among the great performances of Czech athletes.

The choice of the organizer of the World Championship was accompanied by a controversial decision by the IAAF. Exceptionally, it was decided to award the host to the American university town of Eugene, but the decision was made without a selection process.

Then-Vice President and later IAAF President Sebastien Coe was later criticized for the conflict of interest created by this procedure. Coe was also an ambassador for Nike, based in Eugene.

Nomination of the Czechs for the 2022 World Championships in Athletics

This year, 14 individuals and the 4x400m relay were able to meet the qualification criteria, for which the Czech Athletics Union announced a deadline of June 26.

At London 2017, the Czech team included 27 male and female athletes, when the javelin throwers dealt with three precious metals. Two years later, 25 of our athletes participated in the 2019 Doha Championship, and the Czech expedition ended without a medal for the first time in its history.

From the Czech point of view, the busiest discipline will be the traditional and promising javelin throwing competition, in which Jakub Vadlejch, Vítězslav Veselé and Nikola Ogrodníková managed to reach the limit.

The rather unexpected end to the season was heralded by Czech sprinter Barbora Malíková, who qualified for the 400 Race World Championships. Among the athletes who had the opportunity to start in Eugene, the upcoming Europe were preferred by, for example, javelin thrower Barbora Špotáková, shot putter Tomáš Staněk, multi-sport athlete Dorota Skřivanová and marathon runner Marcela Joglová, Eva Vrabcová and Moira Stewartová.
