Cross-country skiing: Petter Northug on Johannes Hösflot Kläbo: “I’ve never been there”

Listen to Petter Northug's words about Kläbo in the player above.

Petter Northug can look back on a successful career with a total of 20 Olympic and World Cup medals. He dominated the world elite for several years and initially became known as a good sprinter.

It is also about the current ruler, Johannes Hösflot Kläbo, but the two stars are very different, explains Northug.

– Until the age of 25, I only dominated the three and five miles in the mass start and struggled to achieve results in the sprint, but for Johannes it was the opposite in the championships, he won the sprint and didn't make it. three and five miles, Northug tells SVT Sport.

He specifies :

– So we are quite different, my sprint was better after three and five miles, while Johannes achieves his best sprint in a sprint.

– So yes, there are similarities, but at the same time we are very different in what we did best when we were younger.

“I didn’t think it was possible”

Kläbo has become known for running in a classic style on skis and off-piste, a style many call “Kläbo running” or “Kläbo style”.

– First of all, he took sprinting to the next level, which was not possible. And I've never been close to that, Northug says.

Northug also believes that Kläbo will win the Tour de Ski, which he has managed to do in the last two seasons. In total, he already has three victories in the competition.

– He was strong in Trondheim and won the triple and went to Davos (training camp with preparation for the tour) and uses the same setup as last year, so he feels very confident now.
