“Drag is a revolutionary act”

In April 2021, the LiFO, published a comprehensive report on the Athens drag scene. Among the drag queens presented by the report were: Nicole Nasty. Fast Forward in October 2021, the music scene DownTown Live in Nicosia, makes the very brave decision to host a Drag Show on stage every month.

As incredible as it may sound, it’s the first time in Cyprus that a major music scene has hosted a drag performance every month and not as a guest, once. The resident drag queen will be DouKISSA as he takes to his big stage every month DownTown will invite another drag queen. For her first event in Cyprus, Doukissa chose to come with her daughter and a member of the House of the Duchess, Nicole Nasty.

Nicole spoke to us before coming to Cyprus for the first time to get to know her better and find out more about what she will be presenting on Sunday 7th November.

«Before becoming professionally involved in Drag Shows, I worked as a hairdresser and makeup artist, activities that I continue to this day. Professionally dealing with Drag Performance, was born from the need to express my artistic side, through the transformation taking place for the needs of the show».

Working professionally with Drag Performance, was born from the need to express my artistic side

One of the people he most admires is Takis Zacharatos, who pioneered Athens with the shows he also presented on stage. With his legendary imitations but also with the person he had created, Myriam Aplou, Takis Zacharatos, he was a lonely figure for years. But now that drag has a name and presence in Athens, it is constantly being strengthened, developed and evolved.

For the Nicole Nasty, «Τdrag is an art and combines many arts together». It’s not just the comedy, song, or facial expression that makes the drag performance special. Not even the impressive outfits and oversized eyelashes.

Dragging itself is an act against what conventionally defines and characterizes us. It is a revolutionary act and despite its extroversion it has a very strong interiority.

It takes strength, confidence and a lot of effort to get on stage and overcome what you are to get where you want to go.

For Nicole Nasty, “what drives me to drag, and what keeps me going, is the love I receive the moment I step onstage. I have enough time and dedication for what I do. From the outfits to the makeup everything is done by me but the styling but it is only part of my overall work and the image I present on stage».

Nicole Nasty will appear next to her “mother” on Sunday November 7th DownTown Nicosia and as she told us, it will be her first performance in Cyprus. «I am very happy and excited about our performance in Nicosia. I am sure we will have a great time and have fun».

Before hanging up the phone we asked her if there had ever been any tricks on stage and the answer was of course yes: “Of course I also slipped during the show and Of course I got up and continued. The show must go on, a little bit».
