Halloween, SB Mister | The most important day of the year to look forward to

About 10 years ago I decided that I shouldn’t be celebrating Halloween anyway. So you could be wrong.

Opinions This is a debate post. The message expresses the attitude of the writer.

I didn’t know any better than I thought the tradition was some stupid American thing. This habit can only be done by the United States along with all the other weird things they do – like Donald Trump and use a car for everything. I thought.

But then my kids got big enough to talk.

Before I had time to comment on the matter, the children came home from kindergarten in September with round eyes and high expectations.

What should they dress up as? Where to hunt for candy? It was just recognizing that Halloween is something bigger than what a single dad would think about the matter.

Besides, it’s supposedly much more fun to be scared for Halloween than it is to be fun for Christmas. But that wasn’t the only thing I was wrong about.

Because then it turns out that it is also not possible to say that Halloween is just an American custom. But a jumble of customs, traditions and beliefs from different cultures around the world.

Namely, a key part of that mix is a notion that a Black Mass should have taken place on October 31, 1589—and there black wind magic meant the future bride of the Scottish king had to take refuge in Oslo.

The Scottish king James VI therefore had to go to Oslo with 300 men to marry his princess Anne of Denmark-Norway (14!) – and to get her dowry of 85,000 dollars.

Faktisk.no wrote more about it her.

But he was not friendly. The king himself took part in the torture of suspected witches and many were burned. The king believed the storm was caused by Scottish and Danish witches in company.

Historians have called this the only romantic event in the life of the Scottish king.

So with this “romantic” story with a link to Norway in mind, I’ve decided that Halloween is now a Norwegian custom too. My kids think Halloween is the most important day of the year to look forward to.

I can understand that.

Happy Halloween!
