More money for women's football – News (Ekot)

This fall, Malmö FF members will decide whether the club should create a women's team. The board's proposal is to take Limhamn/Bunkeflo's place in the series system.

A step towards more egalitarian functioning. But also an opportunity to earn more money.

– We would obtain a larger and broader operation which could initially generate increased income for the partners, explains Niclas Carlnén.

Long-term The CEO of Malmö FF believes that a women's team can generate more revenue. But that requires matches against the best teams.

– Besides traditional revenues, we see that the new UEFA rules regarding matches in Europe will bring more money to clubs, says Niclas Carlnén.

Seven of the twelve associations in the women's championship recorded losses last year and the total surplus of the other five was less than 1 million.

But also Swedish FC Rosengård club manager Jenny Ahlqvist de Souza believes that it will be easier to make money from women's football in the future.

– Many European clubs with very large budgets are launching into women's football. When they want the best players in the world, they look to Sweden, she says.

Today, five associations with men's teams in the Allsvenskan also have a women's team in the league. Next season there could be four more.

For exchanges Malmö FF that of a complete reversal. As recently as 2004, the club got rid of its women's team, partly because it was deemed too expensive.

But FC Rosengård's Jenny Ahlqvist de Souza is not afraid of competition from neighboring Malmö FF. Neither on the plan nor on the money.

– Malmö FF is a team that shows the way for many. The fact that they want to invest in women's football is only positive, she says.

IFK Göteborg, Elfsborg and Falkenberg also plan to create a women's team next season.
