The Scenkonstsverige demonstration – lasts three silent minutes

On September 1, Sweden's performing arts sector goes silent for three minutes in a nationwide protest that aims to show how empty and silent Sweden is becoming without culture, according to SVT News.

The protest follows an appeal signed by the artistic directors and theater directors of the municipal theaters of Stockholm, Malmö and Uppsala, as well as the Dramaten, Riksteatern and Länsteatarrna. Free groups from all over Sweden are also expected.

– Some will observe three minutes of silence during the performance. Others will take part in one of the major events to be held in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö, says Isabel Cruz Liljegrenplaywright and one of the initiators of the call, at SVT.

Simon Northonpresident of the Swedish Stage and Cinema Union, told SVT that he hopes the government will listen to the protest with policy and “clarity about what it thinks culture serves as a function of a democracy opened”.

IN the call described the event as “a manifestation that comes from the desire of cultural workers to make visible the dismantling and deprioritization of the entire cultural sector.”

The event takes place on September 1 between 8:15 p.m. and 8:18 p.m.
